Maca volcano
Maca volcano, southern Chile. Photo taken and submitted by Jorge Clavero, SERNAGEOMIN Chile.

Maca is a poorly known active volcano in the southern volcanic zone of Chile. Geothermal activity is continuing in the vicinity of the mouuntain. The photo was taken from the south (at the Aisén Fjord). In the lower central part of the cone some well-preserved lava flows may be recognized, and an eroded scoria cone lies on the right base of the cone. Strong glacial is evident in the summit area and on the southeastern (right) flank. Precipitation is extremely high in the Maca area. Due to the remoteness of the volcano and the fact that it lies in a completely uninhabited area, no historical eruptions are known, and the volcano remains one of the least studied in Chile. The photo was kindly submitted by Jorge Clavero, SERNAGEOMIN.
