Other web sites about Vesuvio

The prime information about Vesuvio and other volcanoes in Campania comes from the web site of the Osservatorio Vesuviano, the first ever volcano observatory worldwide to be established (in 1841). This site is presently only available in Italian, but an English version is in preparation. You can find here information about the volcanoes Vesuvio, Campi Flegrei, Ischia and others, with the latest on geophysical monitoring and (if any) activity.

Roberto Scandone of the University of Roma III, who has kindly submitted much material to these pages, has created his own web site named "Exploring Italian volcanoes", which vastly covers Vesuvio, the Campi Flegrei and Ischia. It is available in English and Italian (the Italian version has some more information). This web site has grown to become a comprehensive source of information on these volcanoes, but also presents data and virtual excursions on other volcanoes like Stromboli and Etna (the latter only in Italian). You will find there much information not present on "Italy's Volcanoes: The Cradle of Volcanology".

Volcano World has prepared a very instructive Vesuvio page with lots of beautiful photos and some general info.

Marino Grimaldi of the Dipartimento di Geofisica e Vulcanologia at Napoli University has prepared a beautiful Vesuvio homepage with many historical images of Vesuvio in eruption - many more than you can find on this site!

"The Marketplace", an Italian network provider, has interesting pages about Vesuvio and Pompeii (in Italian).

Vesuvius: The Making of a Catastrophe by Flavio Dobran deals with the highly controversial issure of eruption prediction, public information, disaster preparedness, and volcanic crisis management at Vesuvio.

"Rosso Vesuvio", an Italian web site about volcanic risk at Vesuvio and at the nearby Campi Flegrei that critically discusses the Vesuvio emergency plan of the Italian Department of Civil Protection

"Rischiovesuvio.it", an Italian web site dealing with volcanic risk at Vesuvio, with information about precursory phenomena, how to behave, and a list of towns at risk. Somewhat difficult to navigate due to abundant commercial banners and other stuff not related to the volcano

The web site of the Vesuvio National Park at parks.it, and another, different web site (in Italian) of the Vesuvio National Park

"Vesuvio in rete", an Italian web site that contains all sorts of information regarding the volcano and its surroundings, with photo galleries and information about the Vesuvio funicular and the historical Osservatorio Vesuviano

Vesuvian studies made by Luigi Palmieri (the foundator of the Osservatorio Vesuviano), a web page (in Italian) by Michele Giugliano, with numerous historical images of Vesuvio's eruptions
