Lava flows at SE Crater

Effusive vent on eastern base of the intracrater conelet on 6 April 1998.
Left image is a view towards the conelet whose flank above the effusive vent has subsided. Image at right is a view down towards NE in the direction of the flow.

Lava issues from a new vent, 6 April 1998.
Several hours after the preceding two photos were taken, a new flow issued from near the effusive vent photographed earlier, and moved southeastwards across the SE Crater floor.

Views of the effusive vent, 20 May 1998.
The first five photos show the effusive vent and its immediate surroundings from various viewpoints, the image at lower right is a zoom on the surface of the lava immediately after arriving at the surface. Note that a dark crust immediately forms, indicating a low effusion rate and slow movement of the flow. Central conelet is visible in frame at upper left; the depression formed shortly before 6 April at the onset of effusive activity in this area has been filled.

Lava flows within SE Crater on the evening of 28 May 1998.
These photos were taken amidst dense fog and strong wind at about sunset, these conditions rendering the special light and color effects. I never use any filters other than a skylight filter.

Effusive vent, 4 June 1998.
These are views of the effusive vent active on that afternoon from various directions (top left: from southwest; top right: from west; bottom left: from south; bottom right: wide-angle view from southwest with northern part of Valle del Bove in the background). Note the slab of older lava at the source of the lava flow, this is covered with white sublimates (calcium sulfate), rendering a wintery impression. The flow spills over the northeastern floor of SE Crater and down the northeastern flank of the SE cone.
