1994 lava flow of Stromboli

A small volume of lava spilled from the northern end of Crater 1 (visible in the photos below) sometime before 22 August 1994. This lava flow was not reported but was evident on photos taken on 22 August 1994, during a period of intense activity. The first of the photos, taken on 12 March 1994, shows Crater 1 before the cluster of small spatter cones grew on its floor, and the northern flank of the crater is covered with blocks ejected during a powerful explosive episode in October 1993. The lower photo, of 22 August 1994, is the same view, but some notable morphological changes have occurred: the crater has been largely filled by spatter cones, and a small lava flow has spilled over the lowest point of the crater rim towards the lower right part of the photo (immediately below the yellow, sulfur-covered area).
