Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGION 14: MEXICO & CENTRAL AMERICA

  • Popocatépetl: ash emissions with increasing strength during January-March, building a small new cone with sevaral vents within the summit crater. After early May, there was no further reporting on the volcano. The activity began in December 1994, following a gradual increase in fumarolic activity over several years.
  • Santiaguito: no reports about this volcano appeared in the GVN Bulletin in 1995, but it is likely that the volcano continued to slowly extrude dacitic lava onto its complex dome. Activity from Santiaguito continues virtually continuously but at fluctuating rates since 1922.
  • Pacaya: culminating with a Vulcanian eruption on 1 June, this volcano was active throughout much of the year, like it has been almost continuously since it resumed activity in 1961. The 1 June activity produced a tephra column to 6 km and lava flows. A similar eruptive episode had most recently occurred in October 1994.
  • San Miguel: El Salvador's most active volcano in the past 30 years had slight ash eruptions in late March, after 9 years of inactivity.
  • Cerro Negro: following a low intensity eruption in May-August, the volcano produced a spectacular eruption from 19 November until 2 December. For the first time since 1968, it emitted lava flows although very minor lava emission had already occurred within the crater during the summer eruptive episode. During its last week, the eruption reached its climax with vigorous lava fountaining and ash emission. The eruption caused some agricultural damage but probably has less serious effects than the last major eruption, in 1992 (tell me if this is not the case).
  • Rincón de la Vieja: stronger than usual phreatomagmatic eruptions occurred on 6-13 November, causing lahars in several rivers draining the volcano. The most recent significant activity of the volcano had occurred in 1991.
