Volcanic eruptions in 1995


REGION 19: ANTARCTICA & S SANDWICH ISLANDS

  • Erebus: the volcano continued its lava lake activity that began in 1972, but there was little or no accompanying explosive activity. The volcano is not only particular for being the southernmost active volcano on Earth but also for the fact that its phonolitic magma forms a lava lake. Other volcanoes, like Vesuvio, erupt such magmas quite explosively.
