Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGIONS 9 and 10: KURILES, KAMCHATKA & MAINLAND ASIA

  • Bezymianny: powerful explosive eruption on 3 October, probably similar to previous explosive episodes of that volcano (such as October 1993). Such activity usually destroys part of the intracrateral lava dome, accompanied by pyroclastic flows, and is followed by resumed lava extrusion that eventually rebuilds the dome's top.
  • Kliuchevskoi: following its major 1994 eruption, only small-scale activity occurred from this volcano in 1995. The 1994 eruption had been its largest since 1945, destroying part of its summit.
  • Sheveluch: continuation of the slow dome growth initiated in April 1993 may have occurred in 1995, but no reports are available.
