Volcanic eruptions in 1996
REGION 15: SOUTH AMERICA
Sangay: minor Strombolian and phreatomagmatic activity continued throughout the year. During fieldwork in November-December 1995, geologists observed explosions, crater glow and rockfalls from one vent.
Fernandina: for the first time since 1968, this volcano had a flank eruption in January-April. The eruption poured large volumes of lava into the sea and was particularly studied for its environmental effects. The most recent previous eruption of Fernandina, in 1991, had occurred from its summit caldera.
Sabancaya: Vulcanian explosions continued, probably all year round. The eruption began in 1990.
Láscar: occasional minor Vulcanian eruptions continue since the large April 1993 eruption, the latest events occurring in February-March and on 10 May and 20 July 1995.
Irruputuncu: Small ash emissions in late May, the first corroborated activity from this volcano in historic times.
Llaima: ejections of ash and of incandescent material began in mid-October, after slightly more than one year of fumarolic activity. Llaima had erupted spectacularly in May 1994 and again in August-September of that year.
Villarrica: activity increased in April, building a small pyroclastic cone within the summit crater. The cone collapsed soon afterwards as activity subsided, probably returning to Villarrica's persistent lava spattering and lava pond activity that has continued since the end of the last major eruption, in 1984-1985.
