Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGION 5: MELANESIA & AUSTRALIA

  • Manam: minor eruptive activity, from the Southern Crater (occasional crater glow and some weak bomb ejections late in the year). The period of strongly increased activity initiated in 1992 seems, at least for the moment, to have ended with the latest major eruption in October 1994.
  • Langila: continuing Vulcanian activity, increasing somewhat in the second half of the year. The current activity is a continuation of almost uninterrupted eruption since 1967.
  • Rabaul: several episodes of Strombolian-Vulcanian activity from Tavurvur cone, the first starting on 13 February and ending in April, another one started on 28 November and continued into 1996. Rabaul erupted vigorously in September-October 1994, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and causing widespread devastation in the densely inhabited Rabaul caldera. The last major eruption, in 1937, had killed more than 500 people.
  • Bagana: continuing quiet extrusion of viscous andesitic lava flows and dome growth at summit. The activity continues since 1972.
  • Aoba (Ambae): phreatic explosion on 3 March, during a period of intense seismicity and other premonitory phenomena auch as steaming from crater lake and lake level fluctuations. No further eruptive events took place in 1995, and the alarming phenomena appear to have diminished.
  • Ambrym: no reports are available for 1995, but it is probable that the lava lake activity from two of its summit craters is continuing. Activity of this kind continues with little eruption since the early 1950's.
  • Yasur: continuous small-scale Strombolian activity all year round, with some stronger activity in the first half of the year. Three tourists were killed on the volcano in 1994 and 1995, but no precise info exists about when the incidents took place. Yasur, in a similar manner to Stromboli, displays continuous activity since at least 220 years, but probably much longer.
